Reign Rally in Second Half; Defeat Flash 4-2

07/11/2015 10:57 PM -

The Western New York Flash closed out a home-and-home series with Seattle Reign FC on Saturday night, falling 4-2 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle. The Flash (4-5-2, 14 points) remain in fifth place while Seattle (6-2-3, 21 points) jump into first place.

Saturday’s West coast contest was a rematch of last week’s battle in Rochester, where the Flash and Reign played to a 1-1 draw at Sahlen’s Stadium. After holding the visiting Reign to just one shot on goal in that match, the Flash looked to continue the defensive strength on Saturday, and didn’t allow a shot on goal during the first 45 minutes of play.

The Flash entered the locker room up 1-0 at halftime after Amanda Frisbie scored her first professional goal in the 33rd minute. Frisbie’s goal against her former team came off a diving header at the right post when Samantha Mewis chipped the ball across the goalmouth to find her teammate.

Minutes later, Frisbie came up with a big play on the defensive end, heading a shot off the line after the Reign had beaten Flash goalkeeper Chantel Jones.

However, a six-minute span in the second half turned the tides as the defending NWSL Shield Winners struck three times between the 49th and 55th minutes.

“I was happy with the first half, going in 1-0. We did well sticking to the plan but I’m disappointed with what transpired from minute 45 to 55; it cost us the game,” said Flash general manager and head coach Aaran Lines. “We played well for 80 minutes but it switched out for that 10-minute span. You can’t concede three goals away from home and expect to win.”

Former Flash forward Beverly Yanez equalized the game at 1-1 after timing a run behind the defense and roofing a shot past Jones. Three minutes later, Rachel Corsie scored her first NWSL goal after a scramble in the box with the ball falling favorably to her on the left post.

Amber Brooks then made it a two-goal lead when she headed in a bouncing ball four-yards out after a Reign corner kick.

Becky Edwards cut the Reign lead to a single goal in the 67th minute, scoring her second goal of the season. Jaelene Hinkle sent a perfectly placed cross in from the left side and the Flash midfielder won the ball in the air, heading it past Seattle’s Haley Kopmeyer.

The Flash, however, were unable to complete the rally as Jessica Fishlock added the fourth and final goal for Seattle in the 73rd minute, converting a pass from Yanez.

“We scored two really nice goals on the road, which normally, away from home, should be enough to get us something out of the game. We set ourselves up nicely going in 1-nil at the half but we didn’t take the opportunity that we had,” Lines added. “This one will hurt for a couple days but we regroup and move on.”

Chantel Jones finished with two saves on the evening, while Edwards led her club with three shots.

The Flash return to Sahlen’s Stadium on Sunday, July 19 to face Sky Blue FC at 3 p.m. The match will be Rochester’s first chance to welcome home members of the U.S. Women’s National Team and will also be the club’s annual “Pride Game” with limited-edition pride scarves for sale at the Flash Shack.

Tickets for the match, as well as five-game packs to catch all of the Flash’s remaining home games and World Cup opponents, are available at wnyflash.com, by calling the Flash at (716) 655-PLAY or by contacting the Sahlen’s Stadium Box Office at (585) 454-KICK.
