The Western New York Flash started its four-game road trip exactly how it needed to, picking up an important three points on Saturday night when it defeated Sky Blue FC 2-1 at Yurcak Field.

Tied 1-1 late in the match, head coach Aaran Lines made his final switch, putting Elizabeth Eddy in for Jasmyne Spencer. Ten minutes after entering, Eddy broke the deadlock, heading in the go-ahead goal in the 89th minute. After a throw-in deep in Sky Blue territory, Lynn Williams collected the ball on the right side and sent a quick cross that Eddy managed to dive into, putting her team up 2-1.

Sky Blue pushed forward for the next four minutes of stoppage time, but the Flash defense was able to buckle down and secure the victory.

The Flash opened the scoring 34-minutes in when Lady Andrade scored her first NWSL goal, pouncing on a free ball inside the penalty area. Andrade, who has appeared as a substitute in the previous two Flash matches, was able to get her first goal after earning her first start on Saturday night.

It didn’t take long after the halftime break for the home team to find an answer, coming off the foot of U.S. international Kelley O’Hara. O’Hara and Sky Blue were able to break out on a 3-on-1, finding the counterattack after a Flash corner kick.  With Abby Dahlkemper as the lone defender, O’Hara sent the ball wide left to Samantha Kerr, who played back in the middle for O’Hara. The midfielder wasted no time, roofing a shot past Chantel Jones.

Jones was tested throughout the match, with Sky Blue totaling 21 shots, eight going on frame. The goalkeeper came up with some big stops, including a fifth-minute kick save on Katy Freels from point-blank range and another close-quarters stop on Kerr 27-minutes in.

Spencer, on the other end of the field, nearly added her third goal of the season but was denied by the post on two occasions. In the 14th minute, the forward carried the ball across the goal and fired back far post, beating goalkeeper Brittany Cameron but not the right pipe. Seven minutes later, Spencer connected on a cross from Michelle Heyman but her shot went off the upper-90.

The Flash (5-7-3, 18 points) continue on the road for another three matches, next heading to FC Kansas City on Saturday, August 8 for an 8:00 p.m. ET meeting.

The team returns to Rochester on August 29 when the Chicago Red Stars come to town for the Flash’s annual Pink game.  The game will feature player-worn jersey and player-designed basket raffles, as well as donated items from local businesses and sports teams. All raffle proceeds will benefit Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
