Game 17: Flash at Washington

GAME 17
08/11/2015 1:48 PM -

The Western New York Flash will look to bounce back from Saturday’s 4-0 loss to FC Kansas City when it travels to face the Washington Spirit at 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday evening.

Wednesday’s match will be streamed live on YouTube and can be watched by clicking the link here.  Fans can also follow live play-by-play at the Flash's official Twitter page, @WNYFlash, and can join the conversation by using the hashtag #WASvWNYF.

The Spirit are currently in playoff position, holding the third spot on the table, however the Flash are just six points behind and four points out of playoff position entering another pivotal match for the postseason push. With just four games remaining in the 2015 season, every match will be important as playoff positions are still up for grabs late in the year.

The Flash, who are in the midst of its longest road trip of the season (four games), are coming off a 4-0 defeat at defending Champion FC Kansas City on Saturday evening. The Blues took a 1-0 lead into half time on Leigh Ann Robinson’s goal, then scored another three in the second 45 to earn the three points. Yael Averbuch, Heather O’Reilly and Jen Buczkowski all tallied in the second half for the home team.

Both the Flash and Blues totaled nine shots in the game, but Western New York was unable to beat Nicole Barnhart.

The Spirit will also be looking to rebound from a loss, having been beaten 2-1 by Boston on Saturday. Down 2-0, Diana Matheson beat Alyssa Naeher but the Spirit could not muster another goal and fell at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium.

The Flash will have to keep an eye on the Spirit offense, which features league-leading goal scorer Crystal Dunn who has a total of 12 goals over 15 games. Just two games ago, Dunn scored a first-half hat trick to down the Houston Dash and would go on to be named NWSL Player of the Week, her fourth time earning the honor this year, an NWSL single-season record.

After Wednesday’s match, the Flash will have 11 days between games before kicking off a home-and-home series with the Chicago Red Stars on August 23 at Benedictine University. That game, the final of the four-game road trip, will begin at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Western New York is back at Sahlen’s Stadium on August 29 against the Chicago Red Stars. The game will be the team’s annual Pink game, with limited-edition pink jerseys worn and raffled off after the game as well as player-designed and local business donated basket raffles. All proceeds of the raffles will be donated to Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Tickets for the Flash’s remaining two home matches are available at wnyflash.com or by phone at (716) 655-PLAY or (585) 454-KICK. Group ticket discounts are available for parties of 10 or more.
