WNY FLASH ANNOUNCE ANNUAL PINK GAME & NEW PARTNERSHIP
Rochester, NY – (July 14, 2016): The Western NY Flash are delighted to announce a landmark two-year partnership with The Cancer Couch Foundation, a not-for-profit that works to fund high-impact research for metastatic breast cancer (MBC). The sponsorship is part of the Flash’s commitment to aligning with health and wellness issues that directly impact women and their communities.
MBC is the deadliest form of breast cancer, and 20-30 percent of people diagnosed with early stage breast cancer eventually develop MBC. Dr. Rebecca Timlin-Scalera, neuropsychologist and mother of two, discovered this first hand after being initially diagnosed at Stage IV, the most severe form of the disease, and then re-staged to 3C. After this life altering moment, Timlin-Scalera decided to create a financially transparent, volunteer-managed foundation that puts donations to work directly for MBC patients.
Timlin-Scalera, The Cancer Couch’s Founder and Executive Director, says: “As a former collegiate level soccer player, I am beyond excited to partner with this incredible team and sport! I want to spread awareness to females of all ages about breast cancer facts, and that being fit helped me get through treatment. I never stopped exercising.”
The Flash will be hosting a Pink Game on August 27th at 7:00 PM at Rhinos Stadium. The game will be focused on raising awareness for metastatic breast cancer and raise funds for The Cancer Couch’s mission through the WNY Flash’s annual customized “Pink Game” jersey raffle and additional auction items. This will allow both organizations to use soccer as a vehicle to start a conversation about MBC and accelerate the growth of resources dedicated to research that will accelerate treatment for MBC patients.
“The Mission of our organization extends far beyond the sidelines of a soccer field,” said Rich Randall, Flash General Manager. “Our goal is to also make a significant impact in the community while using our resources in pro soccer. This partnership with The Cancer Couch Foundation does exactly that.”
The Flash will continue to actively support The Cancer Couch Foundation activities and fundraising efforts, throughout 2017, where the goals are to fund research projects for metastatic breast cancer. The support of projects at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, who are both matching the donations coming in from this foundation, have the potential for making this a chronic, but manageable, condition – rather than a terminal illness.
Timlin-Scalera adds that “The Cancer Couch Foundation’s mission is to partner with world-class researchers and organizations to create awareness about MBC and have fun funding research to help end MBC!”
The Flash are also partnered with Camp Good Days, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and families whose lives have been touched by cancer.
The Flash will continue their season on the road this weekend as they take on Seattle Reign FC on Saturday, July 16 at 10:00 PM EST. A live stream of the match will be available at youtube.com/NWSL.
The Flash will return home to Rochester Rhinos Stadium on July 23rd when they host FC Kansas City at 7:00 P.M. Tickets for the match are available at wnyflash.com/tickets.
