Academy One of Six Clubs to Take Home Two Titles

RICHMOND, VA (March 21, 2017) --- The Western New York Flash Academy enjoyed another successful weekend of player development, including two teams capturing championship trophies at the annual Jefferson Cup tournament in Richmond, VA.

The Flash Academy 03G ECNL team defeated Richmond United ECNL in a penalty shootout to claim the U-14 Elite Orange Division Championship. The Flash went 3-0-1 over the weekend, keeping Richmond United from scoring in the Championship game – despite the hometown team scoring a tournament-high seven goals up to that point. Goalkeeper Madison Crosbie saved a pair of penalty kicks by United to help lead her to team to victory in the shootout.

The 04G Pre-ECNL team had a successful unbeaten weekend at the Jeff Cup, also leaving Williamsburg with a 3-0-1 record and taking home another piece of hardware. At 2-1 down with 18 minutes remaining in the Championship game, the 04G produced an astounding display of offense to score 5 goals in the remaining 17 minutes to run away with a 6-2 victory over Beach FC in what was a much more competitive game than the final score suggests.

“Coming away from one of the most prestigious tournaments in the nation with two out of three championships says a lot about our players and teams,” Director of Coaching Rob Ferguson explained. “Ultimately this was about playing the best competition we could, developing individually and collectively and preparing for the spring season. However, soccer players love to win, and there is nothing wrong with that mindset – in fact, it is natural and we encourage it. Our job is place the girls in tough environments where development will happen regardless of the outcome, and then challenge them to find success while playing good soccer. This weekend’s results were a huge bonus and well deserved for the hard work the 04’s and 03’s have put in over the last six months.”

The WNY Flash 05G Red enjoyed their first-ever 11v11 tournament as they prepare for Pre-ECNL/ECNL play next year. The girls had to learn quickly about the ‘big field’ as they faced stiff competition from around the country, many of whom are already playing up at 11v11 this year. The girls just missed out on a semifinal place, losing in a PK shootout to eventual champions Wake FC (North Carolina).

The two titles mean that the WNY Flash Academy was one of only six clubs to win two Jefferson Cup Championships this weekend, and the only club to achieve this across the oldest three – U12, U13, U14 – age groups.

“We had a lot going on this weekend. Our 04G Red earned the clubs first ever GLA (Great Lakes Alliance) point, tying a good Cleveland Soccer Academy team 0-0, almost winning it late on,” Ferguson added. “To cap off an excellent weekend, full of landscape changing moments, six of our players participated in the ECNL PDP event in Pottstown PA, training and playing with the best players from the Northeast as part of the ECNL’s national player development program and youth national team identification program.”
