Gary Bruce and Marcelo Moreira Bring Wealth of Experience to New UWS Team

BUFFALO, NY (March 30, 2017) --- The Western New York Flash is pleased to announce that Gary Bruce has been named the head coach of the WNY Flash ahead of the 2017 UWS Season. Marcelo Moreira will serve as the team’s assistant coach.

“I am thrilled to announce Gary Bruce as the next Western New York Flash head coach,” Flash Vice President Aaran Lines said.  “I am certain that he will do a fantastic job cultivating a competitive training environment and help develop the next wave of collegiate stars into quality players and even better people.”

Bruce is currently the Director of Coaching of the Western New York Flash Jr. Academy and coaches two boys’ teams in the Academy. A graduate of the University of Colorado, Bruce won a National Championship with the Buffaloes in 2005. Following his time with Colorado, he stayed in the area and played for local teams in the Premier Development League and captained a team in the National Premier Soccer League before entering the coaching ranks.

"I couldn’t be more excited to be taking on the head coaching position of the Flash in the UWS, building on the organization’s NWSL championship last fall,” said Bruce. “A sincere thanks goes out to Alex and Aaran for this brilliant opportunity. My experience with championship-winning teams will be invaluable and the opportunity this new team provides our local collegiate and post-collegiate players is phenomenal.”

The Longmont, Colorado native joined the Flash organization last year and was a crucial part of Paul Riley’s staff during the team’s 2017 NWSL Championship run. The team compiled an 11-5-6 record en route to the title, and saw forward Lynn Williams earn the league’s Most Valuable Player title. In addition, the Flash saw nine players playing at the international level by the end of the year, up from four at the beginning of 2016.

The Flash were able to retain a second coach from last season’s championship-winning team in Moreira. A former professional goalkeeper, Moreira brings over twenty years of playing experience at the club and international levels to the Flash. He previously served as the Goalkeepers Coach for the Western New York Flash, including during last year’s 2016 NWSL Championship, and currently serves as the Director of Goalkeeping for the Western New York Flash Academy.

“We felt as though it was important to retain as much of last year’s championship-winning coaching staff as possible, and we were able to do just that when we retained Gary and Marcelo,” Lines explained. “These two coaches are able to bring top-level experience to our organization, which will be crucial in the development of our players.”

The Flash will look to continue their storied history as they enter the UWS, which will start play in May. The club won their fifth title in eight years after capturing the 2016 NWSL Championship.

The Flash will be playing their 2017 home games in Buffalo, NY. Information about tryouts for the 2017 Western New York Flash will be coming soon. For more information on UWS, visit http://www.uwssoccer.com.
