FLASH SPLIT WEEKEND DOUBLEHEADER
Team Comes Away with First Win in Pair of Home Tilts
BUFFALO, NY (June 11, 2017) --- The Western New York Flash (1-3-2) came away with a win and a loss this weekend as the team looked to get back on track after a poor result the previous weekend. The home side was able to take home a 1-0 win against the New England Mutiny (4-2-0) to open the weekend, followed by a 3-1 defeat at the hands of New Jersey Copa FC (4-1-0) on Sunday afternoon.
The first match of the weekend featured many scoring chances for both sides, and got off to a quick start with a scoring chance for the Flash in the 2’. The hosts were able to convert in the 33’ as Brittany Heist fed Carissima Cutrona for the forward’s second goal of the season.
The Flash held their lead through the remainder of Saturday night’s game, despite being outshot 17-9. Goalkeeper Alanna Rossi was credited with the win and a clean sheet in her first appearance.
Facing a quick turnaround, the Flash hosted New Jersey Copa FC on Sunday afternoon and nearly came away with a positive result, but two late goals by the visitors squashed any hope of that.
Copa FC jumped out to an early lead after a goal in the 12’, but the Flash were able to bounce back and equalize on a beautiful goal from Cutrona, her second of the weekend and third of the season. Heist was again credited with the assist.
The visiting side scored goals in the 76’ off of a set piece, and in the 83’ to put the game away. Copa FC moved into a tie with the Mutiny for first place in the UWS standings with 12 points after the victory.
“It’s great to see that we are getting better at things that needed to be worked on early in the year, and you can see the growth of this team in every facet of the game,” Head Coach Gary Bruce explained. “It would’ve been nice to have gone two for two on the weekend, but I was pleased with the effort and I like the direction that this team is going in.”
The Flash will return to UWS action on June 17 as they host the Rochester Lancers at Niagara University. The match will kick off at 7:00 ET and fans can purchase tickets here.
