Cutrona Notches Sixth and Seventh Goals of Season in Win

ROCHESTER, NY (June 24, 2017) --- The Western New York Flash (3-3-2) took on the Rochester Lancers (0-7-1) for the second time in a week, and the team continued to roll through the latter half of their United Women’s Soccer schedule with three more points.

In what has become a common occurrence, the Flash got off to another quick start when Carissima Cutrona found herself wide open in front of the net with the ball at her foot, and converted in the 8’ to make it an early 1-0 lead for the visitors.

The Lancers responded midway through the first frame with a goal from Taylor Wingerden, her second of the season.

The second half was full of breakaways, and the Flash finally converted on one of them when Maddie Pezzino ran with the ball for about 35 yards before making a quick deke and putting it past the waiting keeper, letting the Flash regain the lead in the 65’.

Just minutes later, Cutrona added her second of the match with a beautiful strike that hit the crossbar and bounced across the line in the 71’, giving the Flash a two-goal lead. The goal marked the forward’s seventh goal of the season, which puts her in a tie for the league lead.

The Lancers made a late push when Michaela Areno put one away to cut the Flash’s lead to one in the 87’, but the visitors held on for the win.

“At the beginning of the season, I noticed a lack of maturity in the group on many different levels,” Head Coach Gary Bruce explained. “By the end of the year, we’ve gotten to a place where, on a day that we haven’t had our best performance, we’ve had an expectation or a desire about us to get a result. Now, we’re a team that can buckle down and get a good performance, which is a clear sign of maturity.”

The Flash have a bye next weekend, but will return to UWS action on July 8 as they hit the road for their final weekend when they take on the New York Magic. The Flash will then take on the New England Mutiny on July 9 to close out their regular season schedule. Both matches will kick off at 3:00 ET.
