Big First Weekend For Our 04G & 05G Teams

Canton, Ohio (September 10, 2017) -- This past weekend saw the opening league games in the GLA NPL for our WNY Flash 04G Red and 05G Red in Canton, OH and Spire, PA respectively. It also saw the first 2017-18 Ohio Valley ECNL Conference match ups for the WNY Flash 04G ECNL and 05G ECNL in Indiana and Cincinnati.

Rob Ferguson, WNY Flash Academy Director of Coaching, stated "Games are exciting, players love them, coaches learn a lot from them, but ultimately at these ages they are very much developmental tools to test, measure and learn about our strengths and weaknesses. If the real commitment and focus is shown three times a week in training then the games, over time, will take care of themselves".
After 4 weeks of pre season training, scrimmages and exhibition games it was great to see our teams back in competitive action. The 04G Red led the charge winning both their match ups, 8-0 and 5-1 over FC Pittsburg and Ohio Strikers. Madalene Cowburn blazing a trail of 6 goals over the two match ups.
Staying in the GLA NPL, the 05G Red went 1 and 1 on the weekend, following a day one win over FC Pittsburg they fell to a very good Ohio Premier team on Sunday.
Meanwhile, a little further afield the ECNL teams had a very difficult start to their campaign with a long road trip to face FC Pride in Indiana followed by perennial powerhouse club, Ohio Elite of Cincinnati. Both the 04G ECNL & 05G ECNL came home with respectable 1 and 1 records, following up tough losses on Saturday to very impressive FC Pride sides, with two excellent 4-1 wins over OE on Sunday, with both teams coming from behind to win. Wrianna Hudson lead the way with the 05G ECNL with all four of the goals in a terrific display on Sunday, while the 04G ECNL shared things around with goals from Gabby Gambino, Shae O'Rourke (2), Amelia Adiutori & Emma Scalione.
Overall there were far more positives taken from the opening weekend than negatives, and most importantly the players and coaches have some games under their belts and a clearer idea of where to focus training and player development efforts over the coming weeks.
Rob Ferguson stated "It was exciting to see the new Hi-Pod's out there recording six of the games this weekend. We experimented with this last year with our older ECNL teams and have expanded the program for 2017-18. Over the course of the year we will record, upload and analyze games with our players, for teams U13 and older. This is an exceptional player development tool as the ability for players to see themselves play, receive feedback and relate to the information taught in training via real game situations is a huge positive step for our players. Additionally our U14 and older players will have the ability to make their own highlight reels from the uploaded games, for use in their college recruiting process; another example of our commitment to change the landscape for WNY Soccer players".
